Follow these Vastu rules for a happy marriage. Married couples can use these Vastu principles (“Vastushastra”) for designing their bedroom and house. Article also explains Vaastu rules for Indian “Wedding Mandap” (altar) and marriage hall.

Vastu Rules for Lagan Mandap (Wedding Mandap) and Marriage Hall

Vastu rules for Indian Hindu Wedding Hall and Mandap. Vastu Purusha.

  • As per Vaastu rules, the Hindu Wedding Mandap (“Lagan Mandap”) where the bride and groom get married before the holy fire, should preferably be in the North-East. At the Wedding Mandap (marriage altar), the bride and groom should face East. In “Vastushastra“, the North-East corner is the most important corner as it is ruled by Lord Shiva, and is called “Eshan” (or “Ishana” or “Isanya”) corner. Homes based on Vaastu principles, have Temple or Puja rooms in the North East.
  • The shape of the Hindu “Lagan Mandap” should be square. The four columns of the Mandap (wedding altar) should be made of wood or bamboo, but not metal. They should be adorned with flowers and banana leaves.
  • Holy marriage fire should ideally be lit in a square “Havan Kund” that is made of brick and which has equal length, breath and height. If this is not possible, the priest should at least ensure that the fire pit is a square.
  • In keeping with Vaastu principals, shape of the Hindu Wedding Hall should be either square or rectangular. Avoid halls that are round, oval, semi-circular or triangular.
  • As per Vastu, entrance to a wedding hall should be in the East. Entrance in the North-East and North are also acceptable.

  • East is an auspicious area. Vaastushartra suggests that the stage where the bride and groom receive guests should be in the West and it should face East. Alternately, the marriage stage can be placed in the South West.
  • The “Bidaai” ceremony (farewell), in which the newly married couple leaves the wedding site, should be in the North-West. Avoid exit from the South West.
  • For food, square and rectangle tables are preferable to round and oval tables. Encourage guests to eat sitting down rather than standing.
  • Kitchen for preparing food at the wedding should be in the South-East of the Wedding venue. Alternate locations are South or East.
  • The Kitchen and Toilets should be far away from the Lagna Mandap.
  • Toilets should be either in the West or the North-West.

Vastu for Happy Marriage: Bedroom and House Design

Vastushastra is the ancient Indian Hindu science of architecture. Vastu rules for houses are based on the relationship between the five basic elements in nature (Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Space). Flow of energy is an important concept in Vastu.

  • Husband and Wife’s bedroom should be in the South-West section of the house. If South West is not possible, an alternate option for master bedroom is in the North-West of the house. Married couples should avoid bedroom in the South-East and North-East corners. South-West is also a good location to keep the family safe/locker, money and jewellery.
  • Bedroom and houses should have regular shapes like square and rectangle. Avoid irregular shapes.
  • Since the earth’s magnetic force exerts an influence on the body, direction in which one sleeps is important. Positive magnetic energy flows from the North. When sleeping, head should be face South. Avoid placing head on the bed in a Northern or Eastern direction, since this can cause stress.
  • According to Vastu Shastra wooden beds are better than metal beds.
  • A married couple’s bedroom should be an oasis of calm and peace. To create calm, soothing environment, light colours should be used in the bedroom and there should be no clutter and dirt.

  • As per Vastu rules, televisions, computers, mirrors and other reflecting surfaces should not be placed in the bedroom. If these items are placed in the bedroom, they should be covered when not in use.
  • Avoid placing pictures and idols of Gods in the bedroom. Avoid sleeping under a beam since they exert pressure.
  • Door leading into the bedroom room should open at least up to 90 degrees, if not more. Main door of the house should be bigger than other doors in the house and should open inside the house, to the left. This allows positive energy and opportunities to easily enter the house. Toilet doors should be closed.
  • As per Vastu, the North East is the most auspicious part of the house, so the Temple should be built in this corner. This part of the house should be kept clean. Toilets are not allowed in this part of the house.
  • The North-East part of the house is the “Eashan” corner (after Lord Shiva). This auspicious part of the home should be kept open. Drawing room, living room, lobby can be built in the North East.
  • For unmarried girls, Vastu suggests that their bedroom should be in the North-West or West and for bachelor boys; it should be either in the South or West.
  • South-East corner of the house is dominated by “Fire” element; hence it is a good place for a kitchen. Alternately, kitchen can be placed in the North-West. In the kitchen, cooking stove/oven (“Fire” element) and should be kept at a distance from the wash basin (“Water” element).

Kundli Matching: Marriage Compatibility Based on Vedic Astrology

Kundali Matching to check marriage compatibility of bride & groom.

According to Hindu Vedic Astrology, a “Kundli” (or “Kundali”) has 8 “Kutas” (or “Koota” or “Koot”), which in turn have 36 “Guns” (or “”Guna” or “Gana”). Most astrologers use the “8 Kuta” Horoscope matching system (also known as “Ashta Kuta Milan” or “Gun Milan”) to check whether a girl and a boy are a good match for marriage.

In Kundali Matching, higher the compatibility of the 36 “Guns” (“Gunas”), higher is the probability that the bride and groom will have a happy marriage. The best Kundli Match for marriage is when all 36 Guna of the man and woman match.

36 Gun Milan (Horoscope Matching) for Marriage Compatibility

“GUN” (“GUNA”) POINTS PREDICTION FOR MARRIED LIFE
Less than 18 NOT COMPATIBLE. This marriage may not succeed.
18 to 24 AVERAGE SCORE. Wedding match is acceptable.
25 to 32 VERY GOOD MATCH. Marriage should be a success.
33 to 36 EXCELLENT MATCH. Marriage should be a success.

Kundali Matching is also called “Gun Milan”, “Guna Milan”, “Meelaapakam” or “Koota Matching”.  “Janam Kundali” (Vedic Astrological Natal chart) is used for Kundli Matching. Matching of “Gun/Guna/Gana” is primarily based on the position of the moon in the bride and groom’s horoscopes.

Please note that are some regional differences on how Kundli Matching or Ashta Koota Matching is done in North and South India. Also, astrologers sometimes considered different parameters while scoring a Kuta/Koota and Gun, which can lead to different Kundali Matching scores from different astrologers.

In addition to the Ashta Koota (8 Koota) matching, some astrologers also check “Mahendra Koota” “Deergha Koota”, “Veda Koota”, “Raju Koota”, etc. These four Kootas are usually matched in South India.

Indian Law for Marriage Registration

  1. Documents and process for Marriage Registration in India.ALL INDIAN MARRIAGES HAVE TO BE REGISTERED. In 2013, the Indian Parliament amended the law that made registration of Indian marriages compulsory, regardless of religion, caste or location in India.
  2. India has 5 marriage laws [Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, Indian Christian Marriage Act 1889, Muslim Marriage Acts, Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936, Special Marriage Act, 1954]. Until mid-2013, marriage registration was compulsory for only weddings under the Hindu, Parsi and Special Marriage Acts. “Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969″ was amended to make registration of marriage compulsory along with birth and death.
  3. Except for marriages under the “Special Marriage Act, 1954”, all registration of marriage in India is only done after a religious wedding ceremony has been performed. In the case of India’s Special Marriage Act (1954), the registration of marriage is also the solemnization of the marriage. [This link has the rules for marriages under Special Marriage Act, 1954]
  4. In terms of legislation in India, marriage and divorce are part of the “Concurrent List”. This means that although uniformity on laws for marriage and divorce throughout India are desirable, it is not essential.
  5. Thus Indian states have different laws for marriage and divorce. Marriage registration process varies from state to state; but the differences are minor.

Pre-Wedding Marwari and Hindu Rajasthani Wedding Rituals, Customs

1] Engagement ceremony – “Mudha Tika” or “Tilak” or “Sagai”

Hindu Engagement Ceremony, also called Mudha Tika, Tilak, Sagai.

The Engagement ceremony usually takes place at the groom’s house. This Marwadi marriage ritual is called “Mudha Tika” because the bride’s brother applies a “Tikka” or “Tilak” (vermillion powder) on the groom’s forehead. Gifts are exchanged between the bride and groom’s families. Nowadays an engagement ring is also exchanged between the fiancés.

In traditional households (especially Rajput) only close male relatives of the girl attend the engagement and a sword is presented to the groom. In the past, the bride was not allowed to visit her future husband’s house for the engagement (“Tilak”) ceremony.

2] Ganesh Pooja – Ganpati Sthapana (Griha Shanti, Mandap Mahurat)

Ganesh Puja starts off Marwadi, Rajput and Rajasthani weddings. Before starting any new venture Hindus seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu God of Luck and Wisdom and the Remover of Obstacles. A Ganesh idol is installed and worshipped at the bride and groom’s homes. This ceremony is also known as “Naandi”.

3] Sangeet or Mehfil – Traditional Marwari Songs and Dance

Marwadi & Rajasthan Dances “Ghumar”, “Kalbelia”, “Teratali” at wedding Sangeet ceremony.

This Rajasthani pre-wedding custom takes place 2-3 days before the wedding. This is a fun event where families of the Marwadi bride and groom get to meet each other in an informal setting. Traditional Marwadi and Rajasthan songs and folks dances are part of the event followed by dinner. In the past only the girl’s family held this event.

Some popular Marwadi wedding songs are Saat Supari Laada, Banna Kem Re Kem, Banda Aayegi Akhatij, Bai Chali Sasariye, Mehandi Marwari, etc. “Ghumar” (“Ghoomar”), “Kalbelia”, “Teratali”, etc are popular traditional Marwari folk dances from Rajasthan.

4] Mahira Dastoor or Bhaat Dastoor – Gifts from Maternal Uncle

This Rajpit and Marawadi marriage ceremony revolves around the maternal uncle (“Mama”) of both the bride and the groom. The respective maternal uncles are invited to the groom and bride’s house for a traditional meal. The uncle (“Mama”) in turn gives gifts and money to his niece and nephew.

5] Pithi Dastoor – Haldi (Turmeric) or Baan Ceremony

Pithi Dastoor (Baan) is a Marwadi, Rajput marriage custom where Haldi (Turmeric) is applied.

This Rajasthan Wedding ceremony usually takes place a day before the wedding. A paste of Turmeric (“Haldi” or “Baan”) and Sandalwood is applied on the bride’s face, arms and legs. The paste can also be made of a mix of “Haldi” (turmeric), Sandalwood, henna, milk, curd/yogurt and oil. This marriage function is also called “Tael Baan”. This is an occasion for friends and family members of the bride to get together for singing and dancing. A similar function also takes place at the bridegroom’s house.

6] Palla Dastoor or Godh Barai or Samela – Gifts for the Bride

Usually a day before the wedding, ladies from the groom’s family visit the bride’s house bearing gifts of clothes, jewelry, sweets, etc. Usually the Marwari bride’s wedding dress (traditional bridal saree or “Ghagra Choli”) and the wedding necklace (“Aad” or “Timaniyaan”) is given by the boy’s family. This Marwari/Rajput pre-wedding custom is called “Samela” or “Palla Dastoor” or “Padla Dastoor” or “Godh Barai”.

7] Mehendi – Intricate Bridal Henna Tattoos

Intricate bridal henna design is applied on the bride’s hands and feet. Other females of the bride and groom’s wedding party also apply henna tattoos.

8] Janev Ceremony (Janeva) – Marwari Pre-Wedding Tradition

This is a Marwadi marriage ritual for the bridegroom in which he declares he is ready for marriage. Before wearing a three stranded holy thread (“Janev”), the groom pretends he is leaving the material world to become a monk/ascetic. His uncles (especially maternal uncle), persuade him to lead a married life. By wearing the “Janev”, the bridegroom indicates that he is ready for marriage.

Wedding Ceremony and Rituals at Marwadi and Rajput Weddings

1] Korath – Invitation to the Bridegroom to attend his wedding

Male relatives of the bride visit the groom at his home to invite him for the wedding. The Bridegroom accepts and sets out with his “Baraat”.

2] Sehra (Nikasi) Ritual at Marwadi and Rajasthan Rajput Marriages

Groom wears a turban (“Pagdi” or “Safa”) with a “Sehra” (veil) on top of it. “Sehra” is worn to ward off the “evil eye”. Before setting out, the Groom’s sister performs “Vaag Gunthai’ where she ties a sacred thread to a mare that will carry the groom. In Rajasthani Rajput marriages, the groom carries a sword.

3] Baraat – Bridegroom’s Wedding Procession

In Hindu weddings "Baraat" is the groom's wedding procession. He rides a female horse.

“Baraat” is the bridegroom’s wedding procession. Sitting on a female horse, the groom sets off for the wedding venue. The “Baraat” is accompanied by a wedding band and the wedding party dances on the way to the marriage venue. The groom and his “Barat” visit a temple before reaching the wedding Mandap. The wedding “Baraat” is welcomed by male relatives of the bride. Key members of the “Baraat” wear a colorful Marwadi turban called “Safa”.

In traditional Rajasthani Rajput marriages the wedding “Baraat” is made up of only men and usually there is no dancing.

4] Toran (Dhukay) or “Toranchar” or “Dwaar Toran” Wedding Ritual

The entrance to the Wedding location has a “Toran” or “Dhukay” or “Dhukav”. On arrival, the bridegroom hits the “Toran” with a Neem stick after which the mother of bride does an “Aarti” and applies “Tilak” to his forehead. This wedding ritual is performed to ward off the “evil eye”. In Rajout weddings, the sword can be used for this marriage function.

5] Jaimala or Varmala – Marwadi Bride and Groom exchange Garlands

Jaimala or Varmala is a Hindu Wedding custom where the bride and groom exchange garlands.

When the bride and groom meet, they exchange garlands made of flowers. After the “Jaimala” marriage custom, the couple is led to the wedding “Mandap” (altar).

6] Granthi Bandhan and Paanigrahan – Bride and Groom Tie a Cloth

A cloth around the groom’s waist is tied to the bride’s bridal Saree or “Chunni”. This is “Granth Bandhan” or “Gathjoda”. After this the bride places her hand in her future husband’s hand and holy water is poured in it. This is “Paanigrahan”. The bride sits to the left of the groom.

7] Kanyadaan – Father Gives His Daughter To Her Husband

Kanyadan is the Hindu marriage ritual where the bride’s father symbolically hands over his daughter to her husband.

8] Pheras at a Marwari Wedding (Saptapadi) – Seven Steps and Vows

Photo of Phera (Saptapadi) at a Marwadi and Rajput Wedding.

The priest lights the “Havan” (holy fire) and starts chanting marriage prayers. For the “Pheras” (or Saptapadi) the bride and groom walk around the holy fire and each makes a promise to the other after every round (“Phera”). Details of the Hindu marriage Phera (Saptapadi) ceremony and the meaning of the vows are at this link. In a Marwadi wedding, only four “Phera” are performed with the groom leading the first three and the bride leading the last “Phera”. In traditional Rajput and Marwadi weddings, four relatives at the four corners of the “Mandap” hold up swords while this wedding ceremony is being performed.

9] Vamang Sthapna, Seer Guthi (Sindhoor) and Ashwahrohan Customs

After the “Pheras” are complete, the bride sits on the right of her husband. This is called “Vamang Sthapna”. In the “Seer Guthi” ritual, the husband puts red “Sindhoor” in his wife’s center hair parting (“Maang”).

10] “Aanjhala Bharai” and “Paharavani” Rajasthani Marriage Customs

Groom being given gifts at a Marwari and Rajasthan Rajput Wedding.

Just before the newly married couple leave the wedding “Mandap”, the bride’s father-in-law gives her a bag if money. This is the “Aanjhala Bharaai” custom. “Paharavani” is a custom where the groom is teased and made to recite songs by ladies in the bride’s family. This is followed by the bride breaking an earthen pot which symbolizes a break from her parent’s family and her new start in her husband’s home.

11] BidaI or Vidaai – Bride leaves her Parental Home

Send off of the bride as she leaves with her husband.

Post-Wedding Marwari, Rajput and Rajasthan Marriage Rituals

1] Bar Rukai – Sister-in-law extracts her gift

The groom’s sister does not allow her new sister-in-law to enter the house unless she is given a gift by her brother and new sister-in-law.

2] Griha Pravesh (Vadhu Pravesh) – Bride enters her husband’s home

In the Indian marriage ritual of “Griha Pravesh”, the new bride is welcomed to her husband’s home with an “Aarti” done by her mother-in-law. A common custom is for the wife to step into red powder (“Alta”) and step into the house with her right foot. After taking five steps, she knocks off a pot filled with rice and coins.

3] “Pagelagni” and “Mooh Dikah” – Gifts for the New Bride

The day after the wedding, the new bride meets her husband’s relatives. This is an opportunity for her husband’s relatives to shower her with gifts and money. Her mother-in-law usually gives her jewellery on this occasion.

4] Marwadi Wedding Reception

Marwari Wedding Receptions are usually held a day after the wedding. Traditional Rajasthani and Marwadi food are served at the Marriage Reception.

Traditional food of Rajasthan served at Marwadi & Rajput Weddings.

Food Served at Marwari and Rajput Marriages

  • Marwari “Bania” marriages serve only vegetarian food and no alcohol is consumed at their wedding. This no alcohol or non-vegetarian food custom is usually adhered to by members of the Marwadi (“Mewari”) “Bania” community, including Khandelwal, Maheshwari, Agarwal, Poddars, Oswals, Mahawar Vaishya, etc.
  • Non-vegetarian food is served at Rajasthani Rajput weddings, except Vaishnav Rajputs.
  • Popular Marwadi Wedding food includes traditional Marwari dishes of “Daal-Bati Churma”, “Gatte Ki Kadhi” “Rajasthani or Masala Baati”, “Khatta”, “Bafla Bati”, “Besan Cheela Raita”, “Shahi Kachori”, “Mirchi Bada”, “Missi Roti”, “Moon Dal Halwa”, “Jalebi”, “Churma Laddoo”, “Jhajariya”, “Dil-Khushaal”, “Mohanthal”, etc.
  • Since many Marawadi weddings take place late at night, most non-family guest members have their dinner before the marriage ceremony.

Marwadi Wedding Clothes and Jewelry for the Bride and Groom

For Marwadi brides, Red is an auspicious color. Marwari brides usually wear a red bridal saree or “Ghagra Choli” or “Lahanga”. In addition to red, orange, gold, cream and pink are also a part of the Marwari bride’s wedding trousseau.

A Marwadi bride’s bridal jewelry consists of a choker around the neck (“Aad” or “Timaniyaan”), gold ornament between the partings of her hair (“Rakhdi”), nose ring (“Nath”), earrings, marriage bangles (“Chooda” or “Poonchies”), ornaments above her elbow (“Baju”), gold jewelry around the ankles (“Pajeb”) and gold toe ring (“Bicheya”)

Traditional Marwadi grooms wear a “Sherwani” or “Achkan” with a “Dupatta” and Rajasthani “Jooties” (shoes). On their head, they wear a “Pagdi/Safa” (turban) and a “Shera”. Rajput bridegrooms from Rajasthan usually carry a sword for their wedding.

Notes On Arriving at Auspicious Indian Hindu Marriage Date

  • Please note the above auspicious Hindu marriage dates (“Shubh Vivah Muhurat”) are indicative dates. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR ASTROLOGER TO ARRIVE AT THE BEST DATE AND TIME FOR MARRIAGE.
  • The most important factor in deciding the best marriage date and time for Hindu weddings is the “Kundali” (Hindu Vedic Horoscope) of the bride and groom, “Janam Patri” (Birth Charts) of the couple, Location of the marriage and Hindu Panchangam (Hindu astrological calendar).
  • Hindu calendar is called the “Panchang”. The Panchang calendar is also known as Panchangam, Panjika, Panchanga, Jantri, etc. Note that different Indian communities and regions follow different calendars
    • SOLAR CALENDAR: Malayalam, Oriya Tamil and Bengali calendars are solar calendars based on the movement of the sun.
    • LUNISOLAR CALENDAR: Most other Indian communities follow Lunar-Solar (Lunisolar) calendar based on the movement of the sun and moon. Even among followers of the Lunisolar (Lunar-Solar) calendar, there are regional variations such as “Southern Amanta” (aka “Amavasyant”) (AP, Karnataka and Goa), “Western Amanta” (Maharashtra, Gujarat) and Northern “Purnimanta” (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Utter Pradesh, Uttranchal, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K).
  • The Hindu Calendar is called “Panchang” because it has Five (“Panch”) parts/elements (“Ang”). The 5 key parts of a Hindu Panchangam calendar are “Nakshatra”, “Yoga”, “Tithi”, “Vaar”, and “Karana”. The 5 Panchang elements/limbs are the same across all the regional Hindu Panchang calendars.
  • As per Hindu astrology, the moons elliptical orbit is divided into 27 units called “Nakshatra”, which represent a day in the lunar month. Of the 27 “Nakshatra”, astrologers consider 11 Nakshatras auspicious for Hindu marriages. These are Rohini (4 only first half), Mrigashirsha (5), Magha (10 – only second half), Uttara Phalguni (12), Hasta (13), Swati (15), Anuradha (17), Mula (19 – only second half), Uttara Ashadha (21), Uttara Bhadrapada (26) and Revati (27).
  • Hindu astrologers (“Jyotish”) also factor in “Yoga”, “Varna” (days of the week), “Tithi” (30 in all) and “Karana” (60 in all) before deciding on a good wedding date.
  • The full day is not auspicious for performing a wedding. During the day there are special “Shubh Vivah Muhurat” (auspicious wedding time) when it is considered auspicious to conduct a marriage.
  • Hindus avoid marriages during “Chaturmas”, the 4 month period when Lord Vishnu and the Gods are thought to be in deep Yogic sleep. North Indians also avoid marriages during “Holashtak”, the eight days leading up to Holi (“Holika Dahan”).
  • Hindu astrologers suggest that marriages should not take place during “Pitra Paksh” (“Pitru Paksh”, “Mahalaya Paksh”) from 10 September, 2014 to 23 September, 2014 and during “Bhishm Panchak”.
  • Some Hindu astrologers avoid recommending Hindu marriages on Tuesdays since it is ruled by Mars, although in Judaism Tuesday is a very auspicious day for weddings.
  • For those who follow the Lunar Calendar, the below three and a half days are considered very auspicious. These astrological good days are called (“Sade Teen Muhurat”) and the entire day is considered auspicious.
    • Gudi Padwa (Ugadi): 31 March, 2014 (Monday); 21 March, 2015 (Saturday)
    • Akshaya Tritiya: 2 May, 2014 (Friday); 21 April, 2015 (Tuesday)
    • Vijaya Dashami (Dassera): 3 October, 2014 (Friday); 22 October, 2015 (Thrusday)
    • Kartik Shukla Prathama (or Pratipada) (Half Muhurat): 24 October, 2014 (Friday); 12 November, 2015 (Thursday)

Auspicious Hindu Wedding Dates in 2016, 2017

Notes On Arriving at Auspicious Indian Hindu Marriage Date

  • Please note the above auspicious Hindu marriage dates (“Shubh Vivah Muhurat” or “Shubh Lagaan Muhurat”) are indicative dates.

Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra’s Love Story

Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra are expected to get married in 2012

  • Harbhajan Singh was instantly attracted to Geeta Basra when he first saw her in the song “Woh Ajnabee” from the Hindi movie “The Train”. He sent a message to Geeta saying that he would like to meet her tea or coffee. In reply, Geeta sent a message to Bhajji that she was proud of him for being part of the 20-20 World Cup winning team. Later when the first season of IPL T-20 season 1 started in 2008, Geeta requested Harbajan for 2 tickets, which he sent. That’s how Harbhajan and Geeta first met during the first IPL season.
  • Geeta and Harbhajan were friends for 10 months before they got into a relationship. Bhajji was keen to marry and settle down, but Geeta wanted them both to focus on their respective careers.
  • Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra kept denying that they were anything more than just friends; but the rumors persisted. These rumors reached a crescendo when Harbhajan Singh took Geeta Batra home for his sister, Sandeep Kaur’s, wedding. Geeta Basra was received warmly by Harbhajan Singh’s mother, Avtar Kaur, and his family. In April, 2012, Geeta admitted in a newspaper interview that Harbhajan was special to her, but she went on to add that she had no plans of marrying anytime soon.
  • Both Harbhajan Singh and his wife Gita Basra have been discreet about their relationship and have tried to stay away from the media.
